Sydney Uni Basketball Collects Pair of Minor Premierships
Sydney University has finished the inaugural national University Basketball League with minor premierships in the men’s and women’s competitions.
The Covid shortened 2021 competition was reduced to six rounds featuring seven universities and was established to strengthen the pathway to the professional league.
Endorsed by Basketball Australia, the UBL competition was well-received by students across the nation. Spectators filled the stands to witness their university compete against their archrivals to determine the strongest university basketball team in the country. To help promote the competition, each participating university had the opportunity to host and live stream games from their campus.
Sydney University’s women’s side won five of their six matches to finish on 16 points, edging out La Trobe University (14), Victoria University (14) and the University of the Sunshine Coast (12) for the top four berths.
Sydney University men’s side also won five from six to collect the minor premiership on 16 points, ahead of the University of Technology (14), the University of Western Australia (14) and La Trobe University (12).
While it was an unfortunate way to end the competition, with two minor premiership titles now under our belt, the future of basketball at Sydney University just got brighter.
